Becoming well rounded in mixed martial arts kids classes.

When it really comes down to it every parent should want their child to be able to handle any type of self defense situation. That means being able to attack both standing and on the ground.

Here at Ivey league the goal in all of our kids classes is to help the kids become well rounded through mixed martial arts.

Most of the schools in the world today only teach one thing or the other. If it’s a karate school then they focus of stand up striking only or if it’s a Gracie Jujitsu school they only work on ground fighting.

What styles can you teach to help make them well rounded?

The best schools I’ve seen and worked with teach a combination of BJJ, Wrestling and Muay Thai Kickboxing. They do so in a fun and entertaining manner. I mean come on, it’s kids after all 🙂

The other cool thing about teaching this way is you can always mix things up. One day we might work on striking and on another we focus on takedowns. That way you get a lot of diversity in the classes and the kids really like that.

Anytime you keep kids from getting bored you’re winning!

I admit that something like BJJ is very detailed and not always easy to teach kids. The thing is, if you really want a well rounded child then Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training is a must.

Keeping Kids Interested in Mixed Martial Arts

You want to keep things fun and interesting. That way kids stick with their classes all the way to black belt and beyond.

For most of our kids, Muay Thai Kickboxing is their favorite style of martial art to work on. They really love punching and kicking things. I’ll be honest we’ve got some students with downright nasty striking skills!

We keep things changing and focus on lots of different techniques. The goal like I said before is always to help the kids understand why they need to be well rounded and for us to help them get there.

Below are some great videos showcasing the three major styles of MMA in action. Check them out!

First up is Rob Kaman teaching Dutch Style Muay Thai.

Next we’ve got Ivey League MMA Chief Instructor Danny Ives teaching Brazilian Gracie Jiu Jitsu

Last but not least watch Olympic Gold Medalist Wrestler Cael Sanderson teaching takedowns
