For today’s blog post I thought I’d put an old school video of me up just so that the students could have a laugh. I was 18 years old in this video and was a pretty new BJJ blue belt. This was long before I moved to Annapolis, MD.
Here is a little background on this video. It was a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament with the kimono. It was held in Allentown, PA. I remember that it was only a day or two after this huge snowstorm we had. It was held during a karate tournament by a guy named Barry ? (sorry Barry, forgot your last name.) Barry was a BJJ guy from Va Beach, VA. Not sure if he’s still around.
I didn’t have anyone in my weight class of 149 and under (yes I know, I used to be that light!) so I had to compete in the open weight class, which means any weight, any size. I ended up beating 3 people to take the open weight title. Two kids from Virginia and one from Pennsylvania. I submitted all of them with chokes.
Take a look at the video below. This was the finals of the open class and I won via triangle. This is just one example of how a student makes their way from white belt to black belt.
I started digging through my VHS tapes and putting them on my computer. As you can guess, I will be putting more old school footage up on the blogs I have as soon as I get them uploaded (this takes a long time!).
