This past weekend we took a small team to the Grapplers Quest tournament up in Ashbury, NJ. This was a grappling only tournament with no punching or kicking.
Many of the best teams all across the globe sent their fighters to this event and we didn’t want to miss out so we drove from Maryland and took to the mats.
Holden Murphy ended up taking 3rd place in beginner nogi, 100+LBS. Coach Danny spoke about Holden’s matches a bit in the Monday morning class and he thought that this was the best that Holden had ever looked even though he didn’t win it all. He was in a big weight class with some tough kids who are 2 years older then Holden (he is 13, most kids in the division were 15) We 100% believe that Holden will make a name for himself in years to come based on what we saw Saturday.
Logan Williams placed 4th in the beginner nogi division. This is Logan’s second tournament and he will learn and move up the ladder.
Jack Dawson wins his nogi intermediate division, beating 3 very tough opponent to take the crown. He also placed 3rd in Blue Belt Gi. (Jack is a white belt BTW…) We look for big things from Jack in the future as he is improving very fast. Coach Danny said that one of the reasons Jack does so well is that he does everything that is taught in class and has had success with it a whole lot. Lesson learned? Practice the moves and try them!
Jeff Dawson DNP (did not place) but did manage to win some matches and will use this to learn from.
So this was the last tournament of the year for Ivey League MMA. We hope to build on the success we had and plan to do even bigger and better things in 2011. So…..start training now!
