That’s right, last night the students at Ivey League had the opportunity to learn from one of the Kickboxing world’s best trainers, Kru Andy Grahn. Visiting in town from Minnesota where he trains with Greg Nelson, Andy held a special seminar for our students. Andy had so much material to cover – the seminar lasted over 2 hours and the students would’ve gladly stayed for many more hours to perfect their striking and defensive skills.
Andy’s extensive experience was clear from the start. He focused this seminar on how to use basic muay thai skills for MMA, Self Defense and Kickboxing. He gave examples of how just a few simple punches, combined with the correct footwork, can be used for offense or defense once you understand some key concepts. He combined the physical aspects of combat (like how a knock out occurs) with tactical reasons to use certain techniques (such timing a punch with a head slip). Coming from such an elite school as The Academy where fighters like Brock Lesner and Sean Sherk have trained, he uses these combos every day. Andy made it clear that you can learn to fight and defend yourself without getting injured if you take a wise approach. He believes MMA is a lifelong activity and showed our students how to train smart to become champions too. He is an example of that himself as he has been training for decades in BJJ, Judo and traditional martial arts in addition to kickboxing.
The turnout was great and the room was full. Seminars like this with Coach Andy Grahn are an opportunity for students in all of our programs to train together and learn from the best instructors in the world. Attending a seminar with a qualified instructor is like finding a treasure map – follow along and the payoff will be life changing! Congratulations to all the CAP, Basics Program, Black Belt Club, and Junior members of Ivey League who attended. Let’s see those moves in action!
