Yes, we do in fact offer classes for the complete beginner! That’s something I’m very proud of.
My school, Ivey League MMA, actually specializes with this skill level. Because of this we offer beginner/novice classes for the following programs:
- Muay Thai Kick Boxing aka Thai Boxing
- Wrestling
- Brazilian “Gracie” Jujitsu (BJJ)
- Mixed Martial Arts
- Children ages 3+
- Women
- Fitness Boot Camp (Coed or Women’s only)
I wanted to start out with this blog by putting that out there. It’s also because this ends up being one of the main questions I get asked daily.
There’s a reason for this question and it’s highly valid. A ton of MMA Gyms have gotten a bad rap when it comes to teaching beginners.
I guess you could say most places simply aren’t so beginner friendly. That’s not just here in Annapolis, but anywhere really.
Most martial arts schools aren’t even halfway welcoming to new students. Not even close to be honest. So it makes sense for folks to be hesitant about giving these types of classes a try.
I hate this about MMA Gyms too. I could never run Ivey League in this manner. My staff, the students, me and everyone else make it a point to be very welcoming to all beginner students.
Look, just to be straight up, not only do we teach beginner level students but at the same time we love it. It’s great to take someone who knows nothing at all when it comes to martial arts and turn them into beasts.
Not everyone enjoys showing a newbie the “ropes” and that’s sad. I always hated MMA places like that. I mean, if you don’t train the novice students well, how can you expect to have a great team down the road?
You can’t. You need to always be building the next generation of students. Having a good beginner program in place does just that.
And when I say beginners, I’m not just taking about young male students. I’m talking about beginners of all ages. We welcome older students through our doors the same as anyone else.
You’re never too old to start taking martial arts classes. In fact, one of my best students is a fellow in his late 60’s! And yes, he still beats up on these young punks 🙂
We’ve got Beginner level classes for the following types of people, all ages:
- Men
- Women
- Kids (3+)
- Teens
So look, if you can’t seem to find a martial arts school that takes beginners you’re not out of luck. These places do exist. Like my academy located in Arnold Maryland, Ivey League MMA.
Do some homework on the places in your area. Find out if they offer beginner friendly classes. It might take some legwork on your end but it’s worth it trust me.
If you’ve found a place but are still unsure then by all means shoot me an email at info@iveyleaguemma.com. I’d be more then happy to take a look for you.
The old man Danny Ives’ been around for a while, so chances are good I’ll know just the academy you need to go see. Oh and you can thank me later 😉
I’m guessing if you found this blog you might be a beginner yourself. Or maybe someone with very little training under his/her belt.
No worries, like I said, beginners welcome! Below I tossed in some great videos to help teach you more about MMA techniques.
I think you’ll dig ’em. See below.
