This past weekend brought another round of Smokers fights and two Ivey League students made their debutes. As always the event was a great learning experience for the young competitors, as well as for all the students that went along to support the team.
Cammie Jurkowsky had her first Muay Thai bout against a tought opponent who had considerable size and experience on her. As anticipated, her opponent attempted to clinch Cammie relentlessly, but she countered with body locks and knees of her own. After a tough three round battle, Cammie was declared the winner in an unanimous decision, pulling off the win in the third round. Her tough will and coachability made all the difference. Congrats Cammie J!
In the MMA cage, Cody Powers also went three rounds with a gritty opponent. His opponent was a wrestler who attempted several takedowns throughout the fight. Cody naturally used his standup striking to damage his opponent, but also used his jiu jitsu skills well when on the ground. He attempted a Fedor armbar in the second round that nearly submitted his opponent but was stiffled by the cage’s fence. The fight was tough and very close, with the judges ultimately giving the decision to the other fighter. While the decision did not go our way, we hope to see Cody back in the ring soon an even stronger fighter.
Thanks to all the great support Ivey League received from our students and friends!
