I was training with CAP Platunum member David “Lil Dave” Pheiffer tonight. Long story short we worked on and talked a bunch about one of my all time favorite submission holds, the deadly “GUILLOTINE”.

Anyone that says the guillotine doesn’t work must not have ever been put in one. This is a technique that gets it done and has proved it time and time again.

Based on studies that I’ve done of high level MMA fights including those in the UFC, the guillotine is the #1 finishing hold in the world without a gi on.

The same student I was training with tonight told me that he used the guillotine to defend himself in a streetfight and it worked like gangbusters.

Where does this technique come from? Well, the Gracie family made this move popular because it was on their tape set, which was the first of it’s kind back in 1992. They named it and all so much credit has to be given to them. I doubt they made the technique up and it’s been around a while. The name comes from the french killing machine (not a fun way to die I assure you)

With the Gracie’s hyping the guillotine up and the type of move it is it was only a matter of time before wrestlers started to use it and have great success with it.

Fighters like Matt Lindland, Joseph Benavidez and Uriah faber (all from wrestling) have been killing with this technique for a long time. You see, in wrestling they use a front headlock to score points, and since the guillotine is very much like a front headlock the wrestlers had no problem at all adapting this skill to their arsenal.

Speaking of using it in fights, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones used a standing guillotine to choke out and put to sleep Lyoto Machida in his last UFC outing…

At Ivey League we have a few students that have nasty guillotines but the one fellow that comes to mind is Coach Neil Duke. Coach Duke has a brutal guillotine and I would avoid getting stuck in it at all costs!

I could talk for days and days about this technique but I’m thinking that videos would be a far better teacher.

Study the videos below and then drill drill drill (with care and safety)!!!
