As of late we’ve been talking a lot about the power of good or even great defense. Defense….not getting hit, not getting taken down, not getting caught in submission holds and so on. This is all tied into great defensive skills.
I can think of many different fighters that showed off great defense, fighters that come from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai Kickbicking, Wrestling, Judo, Boxing and so on. Below is a list of the best of the best when it comes to defense:
*Roger Gracie for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
*Floyd Mayweather for Boxing
*Rob Kaman for Muay Thai Kickboxing
*Won Hee Lee for Judo
*Buvaisar Saitiev for Wrestling
*Royler Gracie for BJJ
Of course there are more names but at the moment these guys come to mind when i think of the best of the best for defense in their business.
Why is defense important? To start with, not getting hit or caught in a submission hold is a good thing right?! Haha I know that’s cheesy but it’s what good defense is for. In a perfect world you would like to do all the hitting and not get hit (a heck of a goal) Good defense will win lots of fights for you and be a lot easier on your body as well. The guys who fight well into their 40’s do so because they don’t get beat up that much. So good defense is important for keeping you working right and not taking any punishment.
Below are some videos of the guys listed above. Study then and see what great defense is all about. Look at it like a game of football, you score on them, they don’t score on you, pretty simple really. Think about an amazing football team like the NY Jets, great defense! (haha ok that was a poke at Griffin Palmer!)
Check the vids out, I’m going to Ivey League MMA to work on my slipping, ducking and fading (defense!)
