I teach this move a lot in my kids classes and I’ve started teaching it more and more in the adult classes as well. It’s called a drop seoi nage.

This is a very common move in Judo and you do see it from time to time in Wrestling and Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. I admit that when you do see it in BJJ tournaments or in class it tends to be by students who have a background in Judo. Keep in mind that anyone can learn this move (we have some kids that do this very very well)

How well would this move work for self defense or in a street fight? I never got a chance to use this move in that situation but I did talk to a student of mine who was a Washington DC police officer and he said he used them move one time to take down a suspect. I have also seen this move used in MMA by a few good fighters with a background in Judo so I’m sure for a streetfight this wouldn’t be a problem at all.

The move itself is done when you drop to your knees in front of an opponent while holding the arm and pulling them down with you. That plus the torque of you twisting your trunk takes them over the top for the throw/takedown.

Below are some video examples of how to do the dropping seoi nage. Keep in mind that you can also do this move without dropping to your knees but that is far less common and super hard to do for must people. If you want to see how to do the standing version then watch Judo legend Koga.

At 1:03 of the video below you can see it being done in a live match!
