Boxing vs. Muay Thai Kickboxing. Which style is the better choice?
Here’s the thing, both styles are great and very similar. although I specialize more in Muay Thai Kickboxing, I’ve still got a deep love for Boxing AKA the sweet science. I myself started Boxing first, long before I tried Muay Thai.
Since I come from both styles it’s hard to pick one over the other. When it comes down to it and me being 100% honest, I think Muay Thai Kickboxing is the better style overall.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand why. Look at both styles side by side and you’ll see that Muay Thai has more weapons to use.
More weapons means better for self defense and a better workout. You can punch, kick, knee and elbow. Unlike Boxing, which only uses punches. You’ve got one skill set vs many.
Please understand, I’m not saying Boxing is garbage or anything like that. I’m just pointing out the facts when you compare the two side by side.
Again, Boxing has punches sure but Muay Thai has the total package. Punches, kicks, knees, elbows and clinching.
You know what? I don’t really even want to put the two styles against each other. I was hoping to you’d be up for this idea: Learn how to box and combine that with Muay Thai Kickboxing. Now that’s a nasty combination.
The best Kickboxing strikers all train in Boxing. Better punching skills really add the finishing touches to a good Muay Thai game.
I should also note that not only do the best Muay Thai fighters train in Boxing but also a lot of the best MMA fighters too.
In fact, Muay Thai and MMA Fighters have been known to hire well known Boxing coaches. Again, the goal is to be more well rounded. The more well rounded a fighter can be the better.
So in the end it’s not really about which of the two is better. It’s more a matter of what you like. Learn as much as you can about all forms of striking styles, Boxing, Muay Thai, even Karate. Learn as much as you can.
Below you’ll find some awesome videos featuring fighters of Boxing and Muay Thai Kickboxing. Oh and yeah I tossed in a UFC training video too. Check ’em out!
