So check this out…it’s 4:28am in the morning and I happen to digging around on youtube. Lo and behold what do I find?!
A video of me (Danny Ives) teaching my favorite sweep in the whole wide world. I’d forgot about this video but then I remembered showing this at my good friends mix martial arts academy in Virginia Beach.
It’s called the Terere sweep, named after Black Belt and former multi time world BJJ champion Fernando “Terere” Agusta.
I’ve been asked so many times, by lots of different students, about how I’m able to do this one particular sweep. This video pretty makes takes you through steps A-Z. Anyone who’s a fan of the butterfly guard is sure to like this video.
The sweep itself comes from what we in the BJJ/Grappling world call the “butterfly guard”. It’s a style of guard that has you sitting up off your back. Most of your movement comes from scooting around on your rear end.
Butterfly guard in my opionion is one of the most versital styles of guard used today. It works extremelly well for the following martial arts:
- BJJ with or without the use of a gi (uniform)
- Wrestling
- MMA
- Self Defense Situations
- Judo
- Sombo
I learned the butterfly guard way back in 1997. Way back in the day, before everyone else caught onto this stuff.
I happened to attend a BJJ seminar at this local Karate school. The seminar was being given by a BJJ Black Belt from Gracie Barra in Brazil. He ended up showing a whole series from the Butterfly Guard. That was the best $50 I ever spent, I can tell ya that!
Anyway so yeah I liked the butterfly guard so that on the drive home that’s all I could think about. I became obsessed with mastering this system.
I’m happy to say that after over 17 years of working on this stuff, I should have a firm grip on the butterfly guard and the techniques associated with it. Oh and at the top of my list for best techniques from there would be the Terere sweep, at the #1 spot that is.
I want to point out however, learning this sweep didn’t come easy. God no, it took me a few years to get the hang of it. So yeah, take your time with this one and really focus on the details.
The Terere sweep is by far and away my most successful sweep. I think about this move all the time (not joking, i really do) Study the video and see if it works for you. If it does, you’re welcome 🙂
I’ll let you be the judge. Check out the video below. As always, feedback will be welcomed, good or bad 🙂
