If you find yourself watching UFC fights and imagining yourself in the ring, you’re not alone. But what does it take to get there? Can you start MMA with no experience? The answer to this question depends on who you ask—and what you mean by “start MMA.” If you simply want to start taking MMA classes, you can start with no experience at all, but becoming a professional MMA fighter requires a great deal of training.

MMA for Beginners Classes

When it comes to starting MMA classes, you can begin at any age, with no previous experience in martial arts. While most MMA fighters have studied Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai Kickboxing, it’s also possible to start with MMA without any background in other martial arts.

MMA, or mixed martial arts, is a combination of different types of martial arts. It’s the form of fighting used by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and it requires fighters to have skills in grappling and striking. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing are commonly used by MMA fighters because they have broad sets of rules and more techniques are allowed in practice, but with the current popularity of UFC, many people opt to skip jiu jitsu and kickboxing training and go straight to MMA classes.

Even if you have no plans to ever fight professionally, we have many students who simply sign up for MMA for beginners classes as an engaging workout option that offers both strength and cardio benefits. At Ivey League, we welcome students of all ages and at all fitness levels to our Annapolis martial arts classes.

Starting Professional MMA Fighting

If your idea of starting MMA means skipping the training altogether and going straight to the ring, you’re probably going to be disappointed. No matter how closely and carefully you watch MMA fights, you need to have training in grappling and striking techniques if you want to fight professionally. At a minimum, you will need six months of experience and training, but the reality is that most fighters need much more than this.

The best place to get started if you’d like a future in professional MMA fighting is finding mixed martial arts training near you. Even better is when that training is provided by a professional fighter who knows what it takes to succeed in the ring. Ivey League is located in Severna Park, Maryland and run by former professional fighter and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt Danny Ivey.

With MMA classes, you’ll have the benefit of learning the best of Muay Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, wrestling, and boxing all in one class. At Ivey League, you’ll also have the option of being able to take kickboxing and jiu jitsu separately as well to hone in on those skills.
