I was talking to one of my students the other night and we got into the subject of self-defense and how MMA applies to a real world confrontation on the streets.
I’ve gotta admit It was a nice discussion that went on for 30 minutes or so. I brought up my points as to why MMA is the best martial art in the world for self-defense. He agreed by the way.
How do I know MMA works on the streets? I know because I’ve been in over 100 street fights. And I mean real fights, not some cheesy bar fight that goes like this: “he shoved me than I shoved him and they broke it up”
So yes I can say what works from experience, that is unlike most martial arts instructors who’ve never been in a street fight yet teach self-defense. Weird huh?
To me I’m like hold on, you want to teach me self-defense yet you don’t really know the nature of the true situation yourself?
I know that might be a Surprise to most people but I kid you not, 90% of Karate/Martial Arts instructors haven’t been in a real fight.
I hear people say this all the time: MMA is a sport, it won’t work in a real fight. Ah, yes it will. Actually it’s going to work wonders trust me.
I’ve trained in many many different types of martial arts including Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Escrima, Kendo, Boxing, Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Sombo and Kung Fu and nothing comes close to the effectiveness of MMA.
What makes Mix Martial Arts so effective is not only the techniques but also the wide range of positions you can use them from.
Keep the fight standing, you’re good. Go to the ground, also in good shape.
I’ve also witnessed a few pro level UFC Fighters in real street fights and let’s just say it didn’t end well for the untrained bar brawler.
Man I could go on and on about this but you get the idea, or at the very least know my opinion on the matter.
Below I’ve included some sweet MMA highlight videos featuring some of the UFC’s best and brightest stars, check them out.
