As most of you know, I recently competed in a boxing smoker this past weekend. This was definitely a great experience to test my skills and getting used to the feel of competing one on one inside a ring. I definitely recommend doing smokers just to get the feel of competing and getting over the competition “jitters”.

I definitely feel boxing is a great asset if you ever plan on competing in Mixed Martial Arts. In my fight, I utilized great footwork and good head movement against a much larger opponent. Master Danny always says that footwork and head movement is key in MMA. Boxing is a great way to develop these skills. If you watch guys like Manny Pacquiao and Mike Tyson, you will see how effective movement can be. The best use of boxing in MMA has to be BJ Penn. The way he utilizes the jab is the best in MMA.

The most important and under utilized punch is the Jab. I believe for every punch you throw, you should be throwing twice as many jabs. As a short fighter, most of the times I give up reach so I have to find ways to get on the inside where I have the advantage. The best way to do so is to jab your way in.

That’s my take on boxing and how effective it can be in MMA. Remember if you want to get better, it helps to do smokers and go out there and compete. It’s a lot different when you are going up against someone you have never sparred or trained with.
