May always seems to be a very busy month for us here at Ivey League. Everything from MMA fights to grappling tournaments to belt promotions all do their part to take up most of our time.
Below you can read up on the goings on, past, current and future news and events.
The Ivey League Girls Take on New England
Teresa Ives, Chrissy Smith and Alexia Lara all made the 7 hour car ride to Providence, Rhode Island to compete at the NAGA Grappling/BJJ Tournament.
The NAGA always produces quality competitors and this would be no different. The girls all got much needed mat time in, competing in a grand total of 20 matches!
IL Owner Teresa Ives came out of retirement for this tournament and let me assure you, we’re all glad she did! Teresa snagged double gold medals in both her weight class and the open division (all weights combined).
Teresa used a wide variety of different techniques in her matches including half guard sweeps, takedowns and pressure guard passing. That a girl Miss T!
Chrissy Smith or better known around Ivey League as “Miss Chrissy”, also enjoyed success in RI. She placed second in her NoGi division, losing in the finals by only 1 advantage point.
As we expected, Chrissy used a bunch of crazy techniques that most normal human beings simply can’t do, only her. So, some crazy moves with a decent mix of fundamentals and basics got her to the finals. Good stuff.
Alexia Lara, our highest ranked youth student ever here at IL (BJJ Green Belt) made her transition to the adult level, competing in the women’s blue belt division. Keep in mind Alexia just turned 15 a few months ago!
The age, size and skill of these other women didn’t seem to be an issue at all for Alexia as she was able to place 2nd out of 11 girls.
This is a big deal. To have a young teenager like Alexia take silver in her first adult level competition is nothing to sneeze at. Great work Alexia!
Next up for the ladies will be the NAGA Virginia Beach on June 26th. Stay tuned for more good news from these awesome butt kicking gals!
Congrats To All Newly Promoted BJJ Students!
We’re fresh off some brand new belt promotions in our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) program. Congrats to the following students on their promotions:
- Scarface McKann – Gray
- Robbie Ballinger – Gray
- Bella Cates – Gray
- Hawk Natale – Gray
- Reston Abbot – Gray
- Emily Dvorak – Yellow
- Drew Dvorak – Yellow
- Frank Speaks – Purple
It’s no secret that gaining rank in BJJ isn’t an easy thing to do. These students have put in not only the time but also many hours of hard work.
Not only that but these students are also great leaders, not just inside the walls of IL but also in the real world. At the end of the day we want students who do the right thing and lead by example.
We pride ourselves on our students and how they conduct themselves in the real world. We only promote students who we feel have the right attitude and outlook on life.
These students have all that and the bag of chips! Congrats again on these well earned promotions. Step by step will eventually lead to black belt…enjoy your journey.
Last Thing, Upcoming Holiday Hours
In a few short weeks we’ve got the memorial day holiday weekend and with that some adjustments to our normal training schedule.
All classes, both kids and adults will be cancelled on Monday, May 25th 2015. We will however be holding an open mat training session for those who really need a training fix.
The open gym session goes from 11am till 1pm. If you come in to train fantastic, if not please by all means enjoy the holiday!
